L2R: Day 1 – Left 4 Dead, Test# 01
So as this day begins to conclude, I’ve done a little gaming and already have observations to note. Its not noticeable if the game doesn’t have some pressure, for example Minecraft – I can feel something different but unless I’m in a hurry problems don’t really surface; and when they do more than half of them are my left hand – the fingers of which aren’t great at finding the WASD keys very well.
Then there is Left 4 Dead, a game that you can see massive benefits if you learn to groovy your fingers on the W, A, S and D keys. Only hindered further by my resilience in changing my push-to-talk key on TeamSpeak, which is currently left as the backslash key. I found my aim wasn’t off a great deal – if only I take longer to do so, I still scored about my average number of kills compared to my partners in crime (often ~700 compared to 300-500).
Additionally the altered positions of my arms and use has had some impact on muscles, making them ache over a long session. Though after a half hours rest they seem to have returned to normal. For now I’m planning to keep gaming easy while I adjust to the keyboard, which seems to be the main problem.
Just to illustrate, I will primarily be playing point and click games to improve general accuracy, the likes of which are Torchlight and Titan Quest. Terraria and Minecraft are likely to be my staple games for getting used to the keyboard, thanks to their mostly calm and simple nature – at least daily I’ll be attempting to play a shooter of some sort, most likely the likes of Section 8: Prejudice and Left 4 Dead 2 though for the time being these will be brief hourly sessions at most. Strategy games may also be viable for accuracy, but its a fair bit less required.
