General Thoughts #1

I’ve done some minor changes to the site now, including using CSS3 gradients (and MS gradient filters) to hopefully help in reducing bandwidth usage! Even though the impact will really be quite minimal anyway.

I’m also thinking of polishing the style up, making some alterations and releasing it is a WordPress theme for public use; though whether I do it commercially or not is another matter. I also have to finish off my communication form in the footer before this is completed for my personal use. It also dawns on me that Opera (last time I checked) didn’t support gradients or rounded corners, I suspect it won’t look too good in that.

Other projects have been started, some are now really underway – its just a shame so much of it saps from my graphical work, though I’m dabbling wherever I can find the time to do so… I’d love to get a portfolio section started.

Progress Report

I haven’t updated mainly due to having quite a busy time, I have a new set of CSS files which are using CSS3 gradient features (and filters for IE) rather than relying on images for the job; these aren’t live. I’m still pondering the trade-off, on one hand I remove some images – but I have a large chunk of text equivelant to detailed styling of any other element but doing the same job across 3 rendering engines, making it a potential maintenance nightmare down the road.

I have intentions of writing some tutorials down the line – and I’m still looking to expand my portfolio, unfortunately I have about 5 weeks to do a rather complex e-business site for both my college work and a family business. Its manageable, but micro-management set backs and having to work through remote connection (rather than my preferred method of an FTP server) keep making things difficult.

I’m also getting to grips with Tortoise SVN, thanks to a run-through from Logaan I think I can cover my needs now.

Up ‘n’ Runnin’

Welcome to the new site visitors! Hope people like the new theme – it is still pretty fresh off the press and it will likely need some improvements/bug fixes. Other than that it seems to render as I want it to in Firefox and Chrome, with Opera and IE8 working as best I could get them to. If you hover over the little paper icon next to post titles you get a slightly transparent popup with some styling and information. In that regard this is a little minimalistic!

I’ll write a couple of tutorials when I get some spare time, the return to college and over-bearing feeling of only 6 weeks left to get things finished is going to make my projects fight for my time. The footer gives a rough idea of what I want – though I am still spreading my little digital wings; so expect more down there.

Now I am trying to figure a way to either A) split my posts and feeds up into web developing and gaming or B) integrate a second blog solely for gaming related stuff. I also have to make sure Google can find me and numerous other things. Any other critiques (or constructive criticisms) are welcome – I plan to flesh this theme out and may eventually actually release it to the public as a fully functioning and featured theme.
